Constructed way back in 1498 by Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama, this monument has
stood the test of time in more ways than one.Vasco da Gama pillar is located on the seafront road along the beach in Shela Malindi. Made from limestone brought all the way from
Portugal, the pillar stands tall right at the seafront and resembles a lighthouse. Some sources
say that its original purpose was to assist seafarers to get their bearings en route to India. Others
claim that Da Gama built it as a token of appreciation to local rulers after they warmly
welcomed him inland.
It was originally built at the Sheikh’s House and was only moved to its current position much
later. In recent years, its base has been reinforced using boulders to minimize the devastating
effects of water erosion.
