Our 3-day Samburu safari package typically includes game drives in Samburu National Reserve, known for its unique wildlife. There is a diverse collection of Animals in Samburu and the reserve is much valued for its abundance of the Samburu Special Five which includes the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the beisa oryx, which are unique to this area of Kenya and can only be spotted in Samburu Reserve. There are about 75 species of Mammals and many more Birds in Samburu and the surrounding wildlife reserves such as Shaba National Reserve.
The list of the wildlife of Mammals in Samburu include what is commonly referred to as the Big Five ( Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard & African Buffalo ) Only rhino is absent from the Big Five and the Big Nine Animals to further include Cheetah, Giraffe, Zebra & Hippo. There is a rich diversity of Birds commonly found in Samburu Reserve as well.
The Samburu safari often starts with a drive from Nairobi, with stops at the equator and scenic viewpoints, and includes accommodation, meals, and game viewing activities.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown off our 3-day Samburu-Laikipia safari.
Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu
- Pick up from your Nairobi hotel or residence and begin the journey north.
- Enjoy scenic views of the central highlands, including coffee, tea, and pineapple farms.
- Stop at the equator for a photo opportunity.
- Arrive in Samburu, check in to Sarova Shaba or similar, and have lunch.
- Afternoon game drive in Samburu National Reserve, focusing on spotting the “Samburu Special Five” (Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, and gerenuk).
- Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight at Sarova Shaba or similar.
Day 2: Samburu Exploration
- Early morning game drive in Samburu, potentially with a chance to witness a hunt or kill.
- Return to the lodge for breakfast and some relaxation.
- Afternoon game drive, possibly including a picnic lunch in the bush.
- Optional activities like nature walks, cultural visits, or a visit to a Samburu village.
- Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Samburu to Nairobi
- Enjoy a final game drive or relax at the lodge.
- Depart Samburu for Nairobi.
- Return to Nairobi or your next destination.
