Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya and is the fifth-highest mountain in East Africa.
The Sasa Trail is considered the shortest, most indigenous, and most rewarding trail to Wagagai Peak (4321m) – The highest point on Mt Elgon.
Day 1: Nairobi to Mbale
Early morning pick up from Nairobi.
Drive to Mbale via the Busia border. Arrive in the evening, and check in to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Budadiri to Sasa Camp (2900m) to Mude Camp (3500m)
Arrive at Budadiri Gate for the registrations, and briefing, and meet the ranger guides. Register at the office and the briefing is done.
You will then board a boda bodas (motorcycle) to the starting point in Bumasola Village. You will hike through the wall of death, Now the wall of life, Passing by the Sasa River Camp for lunch. Later traverse to Sasa Patrol Camp and Mude Camp at an Elevation of 3500m asl for our first night. This hike is approximately 12km that takes 8-10 hours depending on how you find it, and your strength level.
Day 3: Mude Camp to Wagagai Peak (4321m) to Sasa Camp (2900m)
Early in the morning after breakfast, you will embark on a hike to the summit, passing through Jackson Pool, and besides Jackson Peak, and a view of Jackson’s table. The views here are stunning. You then proceed to the Wagagai Peak, walking along the Caldera rim. It’s 9km to the peak and 9km back making a total of 18km. After touring, you will descend to Mude camp either for a snack or a break then traverse to Sasa River Camp for your 2nd night.
Day 4: Descend to Budadiri
After your early breakfast, you shall exit the park by descending to Bumasola Village where you will be picked up by boda bodas transferring you to the Budadiri office. This marks the end of your 3 days mountain experience.
Transfer back to the hotel.
Day 5: Return to Nairobi
Morning breakfast at the hotel, followed by check out.
Drive back to Nairobi to arrive in the early evening.
