A day hike from Kisumu to
Got Ramogi (Ramogi Hills) is more than just a trek; it is a journey into the spiritual and ancestral heart of the Luo community. Located roughly 50–90 km from Kisumu in Siaya County, these hills represent the “cradle” of the Luo people, where their founding patriarch,
Ramogi Ajwang’, first settled upon migrating from South Sudan over 800 years ago.
Highlights of the Experience
- Sacred Shrines & Legends: The hill is home to numerous “Hembko” (shrines). You can visit the Rapogi Stone, an altar where Ramogi is said to have prayed for rain, and Kar-Dhiang, rock formations resembling a cow and calf where he reportedly grazed his animals.
- Nature & Views: Hike through 283 hectares of lush, dry tropical forest teeming with diverse birdlife and butterflies. Reaching the summit rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of the Yala Swamp and the vast expanse of Lake Victoria.
- Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum: Complete your historical circuit by visiting this iconic site at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo. It serves as a tribute to Kenya’s first Vice President and a central figure in the struggle for independence. The mausoleum functions as a museum, housing Jaramogi’s personal artifacts—like his signature walking sticks—alongside Luo cultural weapons and shields.
